The Shapers are ambivalent corrupt-but-not-evil overlords, magic used to dabble in poorly understood genetic manipulation, a world build of living tools and living weapons. big text popups from time to time.)įinally, I think Geneforge is one of the more interesting fantasy settings around, and I really enjoy the world building. They're told much the same way as in Avernum, though. The stories themselves tend to be more political and raise quite interesting questions about power, self-determination, risk and proliferation. All Geneforge games have multiple factions, track player's reputation, and have multiple endings. (Though you can still do so if you want or are feeling completionist.) In Geneforge, there are almost always multiple ways of getting past an area or challenge, and it's not really expected that a single character can take on every single area of the game. Combat itself is similar-ish, but the way you approach it is quite different because of the single character with expendable minions style.ĭungeons and battles also tend to have a puzzle-like element to them more often, with challenges like mines, turrets, pylons, spawners and environmental effects doing much to shake things up. Gameplay wise, you have a single protagonist backed up by shaped monsters instead of a party. I much prefer Geneforge, but Avernum has at least as many dedicated fans.
